One of the busiest roads in Cagayan de Oro, Velez Street is surrounded by mid-rise buildings and historical landmarks. It is also a major thoroughfare connecting the National Highway to the southern portion of the city.
Velez Street is wide stretch of all sorts of businesses like banks, food establishments, hospitals, inns and hotels. Some of the famous buildings here are Sabal Hospital, Polymedic General Hospital, and VIP Hotel.
For Kagay-anons, passing by Velez Street brings back memories. Aside from the fact that it has been a chosen route for annual fiesta parades, it is surrounded by old government institutions and public places like the Vicente de Lara Park, Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School, Don Gregorio Pelaez Sports Center, and the City Central School.
Today, Velez Street continues to flourish. More businesses are sprouting like the five storey Pioneer Building and the upcoming 17th Jollibee branch in Cagayan de Oro, the one beside Polymedic General Hospital. Across the hospital is a budding dining district where cheap food stalls and eateries are thriving.
What will Velez Street be in the next few years? Only time can tell.
