Throwback Thursday: From Grasslands to Landmarks

Not so long ago, roughly a year or two, these buildings that are already functional today were just vacant lots covered with grass that eventually became fenced construction sites with giant steel rods sprouting like tentacles. They were once manic sites of men in hard hats, under construction buildings in a booming metropolis… Cagayan de Oro. Today, they are already standing tall. We are already using them and enjoying the benefits that they bring.

An eco-friendly condominium in Cagayan de Oro? That was a question raised by some doubtful minds before. They were not sure if Cagayan de Oro is ready for this kind of ambitious residential development. Today, Primavera Residences Tower 1 is already fully operational and is always fully booked. Its ground floor is occupied by restaurants. Tower 2 is already under construction with works currently on the sixth floor. This first eco friendly residential building in Mindanao was recently cited as the country’s “new business leaders” by the National Geographic.

Fronting Primavera Residences is another condominium. Gran Via Residences is one of the condominium projects that was completed in a short period of time. Following its success is the building next to it, the Gran Via Suites.

This lot used to be a carnival during the city fiesta and grassy in the rest of the year. A portion of it was occupied by Suzuki and a travel agency. Today, this is one of the dining, shopping, and entertainment destinations in Cagayan de Oro. Centrio Mall has redefined the lifestyle of Kagayanons.

“Cagayan de Oro is not fit for highrise buildings. This city’s soil is too soft for tall structures. It is close to sea level, a floating city.” I used to hear this from CDO folks. But, Limketkai proved them wrong. Currently the king of CDO’s skyline, the 19 storey Limketkai Luxe has brought the hotel experience in the city to a whole new level. It is the first four star hotel in the City of Golden Friendship.

There you go folks. CDO took less than three years only to achieve these transformations. As the city continues to grow, I am one of the many Kagayanons that are getting more excited to witness a more advanced Cagayan de Oro in the years to come.
