TG Year End Review: Top 10 Store Openings of 2013

Undoubtedly, 2013 is another vibrant year for business in Cagayan de Oro. There are plenty of store openings that took place. This year’s openings are more on supermarkets which offer cheaper prices and better services. On the other hand, there are plenty of new clothing brands and food establishments too. But, we have decided to make a separate article for food establishments. The invasion of these new businesses have escalated our lifestyle.

Let us look back the top ten store openings this year that made a huge impact to us Kagay-anons. In no particular order….

1. Puregold

This is the first Puregold in Cagayan de Oro and the flagship store in Mindanao. They offer cheaper prices in certain goods, some items even have a 4 peso difference compared to other supermarkets in the city. Their “Tindahan ni Aling Puring” has helped many owners of sari-sari stores, eateries, and wholesalers in Cagayan de Oro and Northern Mindanao with their cheap packages that can really augment the income of small scale entrepreneurs.

2. Peugeot

After BMW, another upscale Euro brand car maker has opened its dealership in Cagayan de Oro. Peugeot, the second largest car maker in Europe has opened its first showroom in Mindanao last February 27 here in our city at Masterson’s Avenue near SM City. As of today, Tsada Gyud has been seeing lots of Peugeot cars with temporary plates traversing the city streets. One blogger from Naga City even said that people in CDO must be so rich for having these car dealerships.

3. Rustan’s Supermarket Centrio

Donnie Tantoco, the president of Rustan’s Specialty Concepts Inc., has seen the potential of the booming market of Cagayan de Oro. That is why he has brought the first Rustan’s Fresh in Mindanao here which opened last March 17. Located at Centrio Mall, this is not just any Rustan’s Fresh. It is the largest in the country. Having been known as an upscale mart, Rustan’s Fresh caters mostly to shoppers with discriminating tastes.

4. Robinsons Department Store Centrio

Robinson’s Department Store has opened its second branch in the city at Centrio Mall. It opened last June 5, completing the list of anchor stores of Centrio Ayala Mall together with Rustan’s Fresh. Also found at Robinson’s Centrio are its other retail concepts like True Value and Toys R Us.

5. Wellcome 

One of the largest supermarket chains in Hong Kong is already in Cagayan de Oro with the opening of its first store in Mindanao at Gran Europa. Residents in Uptown Cagayan de Oro especially in subdivisions within Gran Europa are now having the convenience of buying their groceries closer to their homes without going to downtown or to SM City. Thanks to Rustan’s for bringing Wellcome to the Philippines and to Cagayan de Oro. 

6. Robinson’s Department Store Limketkai

Robinson’s Department Store at Limketkai has transferred to a new location (former Plaza Fair) which is more spacious and roomy. This two level department store looks more classy and elegant giving a richer shopping experience to Kagay-anons.

7. Ororama Cogon New Wing 

With the presence of new bigger players in the city like Ayala and with the renovation of existing malls like Limketkai and Gaisano Mall, Ororama has also made its classy upgrade. It has expanded to the former location of Rural Bank and After Six Tailoring. This new wing of Ororama Cogon has a better ambiance which is far from the dark and tight layout of Ororama stores. It has provided more spaces for more shops that will open soon.

8. Cotton On

This is the newest store at Centrio which is one of their biggest tenants. According to Hammer Roa of Centrio Mall, Cotton On has occupied the entire block at the west wing which is equivalent to five spaces. Currently, Kagay-anons mostly teenagers and young professionals are frolicking to this store, seeking for trendy clothes and accessories.

9. Shopwise

After Rustan’s Fresh and Wellcome, Donnie Tantoco has brought Rustan’s hypermarket chain Shopwise to Cagayan de Oro. It is located at the new building in the east side of Limketkai Mall. Shopwise also has cheap daily offers that allow Kagayanons to enjoy bigger savings. They also have an automated parking area.

10. Robinsons Supermarket Limketkai Mall

Robinsons Supermarket has opened its third branch in the city last November 29. It is seated at the south wing of Limketkai Mall, the former location of Plaza Fair. Robinsons has decided to manage two supermarkets within Limketkai Center, the other one is at Robinsons Mall Cagayan de Oro.
