The World AIDS Day is fast approaching. Sadly, Cagayan de Oro has remained a hotspot of Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV-AIDS) as cases in the city and in Northern Mindanao is still increasing. In an article from Sun Star Cagayan de Oro, there has been a significant increase of reported cases in our region in the second quarter of 2013. This information came straight from Dr. Evelyn Magsayo, the program officer of DOH’s sexually transmitted infection prevention control program for Northern Mindanao.
Fortunately, there are private groups in the city that have organized awareness campaign to fight the spread of HIV-AIDS. One of them is Pagbantog Kagayan, Pagbantog HIV (see their Facebook page here) spearheaded by Atty. Sam Tan. There are plenty of activities that are scheduled this weekend. To name a few, there will be a forum at the 2nd level of Limketkai Mall (near playhouse) on Saturday afternoon, the first ever HIV March in Cagayan de Oro will take place on Sunday at 8 AM, and in the afternoon there will be a festival of music and monologues at Limketkai Rotunda.
