XU lands second place in 1st Philippine Collegiate Peace Debates

Xavier University landed on the second spot in the 1st Philippine Collegiate Peace Debates in a 5-4 split decision against the University of the Philippines Diliman. The finals was held at AFP Theater last September 16 using the Asian Parliamentary Debate Format. The motion was “In order to weaken the insurgent recruitment of the youth in the armed struggle, this house believes that the military should be allowed to use propaganda in schools.” Gian Marlon Libot of Xavier University was declared Best Speaker. His teammates were Arvin Gogo and Rene Gandeza.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines sponsored this debate tournament and was organized by La Salle Debate Society. This debate championship is very timely with insurgencies affecting some parts of Mindanao like Zamboanga City.

There were twenty schools that participated in they were as follows: University of the Philippines Diliman, Xavier University, Ateneo de Manila University, University of the Philippines Manila, University of the Philippines Los Baños, San Beda College, Far Eastern University, University of Santo Tomas, College of St. Benilde, Mapua Institute of Technology, St. Louis University, Western Mindanao State University, University of the Philippines Baguio, Ateneo de Davao University, Ateneo de Naga University, University of the Philippines Cebu, University of the Philippines Tacloban, Philippine Military Academy, and University of the Philippines Visayas – Miagao.
