June 29, 2013 was a historic day in the medical field in Cagayan de Oro as the first refractive surgery in Northern Mindanao was held at the Refractive Laser and Surgicenter of Mindanao located at Madonna and Child Hospital.
The surgery was conducted by Dr. Raymond Evangelista, a general ophthalmologist who practices in Manila and Dr. Rustan Hautea, a CDO based ophthalmologist who has clinics at Maria Reyna Hospital, Cagayan de Oro Medical Center, and of course Refractive Laser and Surgicenter of Mindanao. Dr. Evangelista did the didactics on refractive laser and also did a wet lab. With a variety of patients, he was able to show to the observing doctors how LASIK and Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) are done.
Among those who observed were Dr. Miguel Kho, the hospital administrator of Madonna and Child Hospital; Ophthalmologist Dr Irwin Arribas of Madonna and Child Hospital; Dr Barlaan, an ophthalmologist whose clinic is in Maria Reyna-Xavier University Hospital; Dr Cañete who is an EENT with a clinic at Polymedic General Hospital-Velez, Dr Romero, an ophthalmologist still from Polymedic General Hospital; Dr Sun Co, an ophthalmologist of Sabal Hospital; and Dr Lamatan who is an ophthalmologist that practices in Camiguin, Bukidnon and Cagayan de Oro.
Refractive surgery is a method that corrects refractive error, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia. It adjusts the eye’s focusing ability by reshaping the cornea.
